OlaRemote is a free television remote-control application developed by AFOLAOLA, Global Digital Solutions ("AFOLAOLA", "we", "us" or "our").
This Privacy Notice explains how OlaRemote handles information when you use the Android application, including information stored on your device, communications with your television and information you provide when contacting us.
OlaRemote works without an AFOLAOLA account and without any AFOLAOLA remote-control server. The only contact with an AFOLAOLA website is the optional update notice for copies downloaded from afolaola.com, described in section 3. In short: your remotes stay on your phone, and your commands go from your phone to your TV.
1. Our privacy approach
OlaRemote is built to collect as little information as possible and to keep remote-control activity on your device.
In this version:
- No account is required. You do not need to create an AFOLAOLA account to use the App.
- Local storage. Saved remotes and preferences stay on your device.
- Direct communication. Smart TV commands travel directly from your phone to your television over your local network. Infrared commands are sent from a compatible phone to the television.
- No advertising or tracking. The App contains no advertising, analytics or third-party crash-reporting tools.
- No AFOLAOLA remote-control server. The App does not send saved remotes, television details, local network addresses or button presses to AFOLAOLA.
These statements describe this version of OlaRemote. Features, permissions and data practices may change in future versions; if they do, we will update this Notice before releasing the change.
2. Information stored on your device
OlaRemote may store the following information locally to provide its features.
Saved remotes
This may include:
- The name you assign to a remote.
- Whether it is configured for Smart TV or infrared control.
- Creation and last-used timestamps.
Smart TV connection information
For a configured Smart TV, this may include:
- The television's reported name and model, where available.
- Its local network IP address and connection port.
- An identifier reported by the television, where available.
- Its network hardware (MAC) address, where the television reports it, used only to send a Wake-on-LAN signal when you ask the App to try waking a sleeping television.
For supported Roku devices, the saved identifier is derived from the device's serial number. This information helps the App identify and reconnect to the selected television.
Pairing information
Samsung and LG televisions ask you to approve a new controller on the television screen. Android TV, Google TV and Vizio televisions show a code that you type into the App. When you complete pairing, the television issues a pairing token (Samsung), client key (LG) or authorisation token (Vizio), or, for Android TV and Google TV, records this phone's certificate. OlaRemote stores the token or key, or a marker that the television is paired, so you are not asked again.
For Android TV and Google TV, OlaRemote creates a certificate and private key that identify this phone to televisions. The private key is generated inside the Android Keystore and cannot be exported or backed up.
OlaRemote also remembers a fingerprint of the security certificate each of these televisions presents. If a television later presents a different certificate, OlaRemote refuses to connect and tells you, rather than connecting silently.
Pairing tokens, client keys, pairing markers and certificate fingerprints are stored only on your device, in the App's private storage, encrypted with a key held in the Android Keystore. They are excluded from Android cloud backup and device transfer, and are removed when you delete the saved remote or uninstall the App. They are never sent to AFOLAOLA.
Infrared configurations
This may include:
- The brand or infrared code set you select or import.
- The button codes required to send infrared commands.
App preferences
This may include:
- Your haptic-feedback, phone-volume-button and keep-screen-on preferences.
- Whether you have completed the welcome screen.
This information is stored in the App's private storage on your device. It is not uploaded to AFOLAOLA.
OlaRemote does not store television account passwords or PINs. It stores only the pairing information described above. If a future version introduces a platform requiring other credentials, we will assess the associated privacy and security requirements and update this Notice before releasing that functionality.
3. Local network communications
Smart TV control requires communication between your phone and a compatible television on your local network.
Device discovery
When you search for a television, OlaRemote sends discovery messages over your local network and listens for responses. Responding devices may provide information such as their name, model, network address and device identifier.
The App uses these responses locally to help you select a television.
Remote-control commands
When you press a button, OlaRemote sends the corresponding command to the selected television's local network address.
For supported Roku devices, communication may involve a local HTTP request to the device on port 8060. For supported Samsung televisions, it uses a local WebSocket connection (ports 8001 and 8002). For supported LG webOS televisions, it uses a local WebSocket connection (ports 3000 and 3001). For Android TV and Google TV it uses a local encrypted (TLS) connection on ports 6466 and 6467, found through multicast DNS. For Vizio it uses a local HTTPS connection on port 7345 or 9000. If you ask the App to wake a sleeping television, it broadcasts a Wake-on-LAN packet on your local network. All of these stay on your local network.
Your television may record commands, connection information or other activity according to its own software, settings and policies.
Text entry
If you use a text-entry feature, the text you enter may be transmitted to the selected television so it can appear on the television or within the relevant application. When you tap an app shortcut, the App sends a command to the television to open that app. The App does not keep a history of the apps you open or the text you type. The App also has a connection check that tests the path between your phone and a television on your own network. It produces a report on your phone; the report is shared only if you choose to copy or share it, and it hides the last part of the address and excludes the television's name and serial number.
Network status
OlaRemote checks whether your phone is connected to Wi-Fi, Ethernet, mobile data or a VPN, so it can reconnect when the network changes and can tell you when your phone is not on a network where a TV can be reached. It does not read the name of your Wi-Fi network and does not use your location.
OlaRemote does not transmit your saved remotes, television identifiers, local network addresses, remote-control commands or usage history to AFOLAOLA. The optional update notice described below is the only request the App makes to an AFOLAOLA website.
Android may require network permissions for local device communication. The presence of a network permission does not, by itself, mean information is being sent to an AFOLAOLA server.
Update notice (copies downloaded from our website only)
If you install OlaRemote from our website, the app checks once a day whether a newer version is available by requesting a small public file from remote.afolaola.com. This request does not include information about your TV, your saved remotes or you. Like any web request, it reveals your phone's internet (IP) address and the time of the request to our website host, which may keep ordinary server logs. You can turn this off in Settings, Tell me about new versions. Copies installed from Google Play do not make this request; Google Play provides updates.
4. Infrared control and imported files
If your phone has a compatible built-in infrared transmitter, OlaRemote may use it to send infrared signals to a television.
Infrared control is generally one-way. The App cannot necessarily confirm that a television received a signal or performed the requested action.
If you import an infrared configuration file, OlaRemote processes the file you select through Android's file-selection interface. The file is processed on your device and is not uploaded to AFOLAOLA.
You are responsible for ensuring that you have the necessary rights to import and use any file you select.
5. App permissions
Depending on your Android version, device and selected features, OlaRemote may use permissions or system capabilities for:
- Local network communication with your television.
- Checking network connectivity.
- Receiving local network discovery responses.
- Using a compatible phone's infrared transmitter.
- Accessing a file you explicitly select for import.
Some Android permissions may not display a separate approval prompt. On Android versions that require explicit local network access approval, you may be asked to grant that permission.
If you deny a permission required for a feature, that feature may not work. For example, denying local network access may prevent Smart TV discovery or control, while infrared control may remain available on a compatible phone.
OlaRemote does not request location, camera, microphone, contacts or Bluetooth access. The permissions used by a particular release depend on its features and on Android's requirements, and this Notice will be updated if they change.
6. Logs, diagnostics and analytics
OlaRemote contains no advertising, analytics or third-party crash-reporting software that transmits App activity to external services.
Public releases do not write diagnostic logs. Test versions may use local diagnostic logs to help identify problems.
Diagnostic logging should avoid exposing passwords, PINs, tokens or other confidential information. Logs are not intended to be sent to AFOLAOLA automatically.
Android, Google Play, your device manufacturer or other third parties may independently process information under their own policies and settings.
7. Backups, retention and deletion
Saved remotes and settings stay in the App's private storage on your device. The App excludes its data from Android cloud backup and device-transfer backup.
You can manage information as follows:
- Delete a saved remote: use the deletion option within OlaRemote. This removes the saved remote, and the pairing information stored for it, from the App's local data.
- Uninstall OlaRemote: uninstalling the App removes its private app data from your device. Information separately copied, exported or backed up elsewhere may remain.
Because mobile devices use flash storage and may maintain system-level copies or backups, deleting data cannot guarantee that every physical trace is immediately and permanently erased.
AFOLAOLA does not hold your saved remotes or remote-control history on a server. We therefore generally cannot retrieve or delete local App data on your behalf.
If you contact AFOLAOLA by email or through a support channel, we may retain that correspondence as explained in this Notice.
8. Information you provide to AFOLAOLA
If you contact us by email or through a support channel, we receive the information you choose to provide. This may include your name, email address, message, attachments, device details or information relevant to your request.
We may use this information to:
- Respond to enquiries and support requests.
- Investigate reported security issues.
- Maintain appropriate correspondence records.
- Protect our services and address misuse.
- Meet applicable legal obligations.
Please avoid including passwords, television PINs, private network details or other sensitive information unless necessary and an appropriate method for sharing it has been provided.
We keep correspondence for as long as needed to deal with your request, and normally delete it within 24 months after the matter is closed, unless the law requires us to keep it longer or it relates to an open dispute or security issue.
9. Third-party services
Android and Google Play
If you obtain OlaRemote through Google Play, Google may process information associated with app distribution, installation, updates, security and diagnostics according to its own policies, services and settings.
Information you choose to share with Google may be handled independently of OlaRemote. Google may also provide certain app performance or diagnostic information to developers under its applicable services and policies. AFOLAOLA does not add its own tracking to the App.
Your television and its platform
Your television manufacturer and its operating system or platform may process information when your television receives commands or communicates over your network. Their privacy notices and terms apply to their services.
Your local network
Your router and other devices or administrators on your network may be able to observe certain local network communications, depending on the network configuration.
AFOLAOLA's website
If you open an AFOLAOLA website link from the App, your browser connects to that website. The browser, hosting provider and website infrastructure may process information associated with that visit. Those activities are governed by the website's own privacy information.
OlaRemote does not use remote-control activity to create advertising profiles, and does not sell or share it with advertisers.
10. Children
OlaRemote is a general-purpose utility. It is intended for people aged 13 and over and is not directed at children under 13.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The App's remote-control features collect no personal information from anyone. If you believe a child under 13 has sent personal information to AFOLAOLA through email or support, contact privacy@afolaola.com and we will delete it.
We will assess the request and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable law. Any age-related requirements for distribution or use will be addressed in the applicable store listing and terms.
11. Privacy rights and requests
Wherever you live, you can ask us to tell you what personal information we hold about you, and to correct or delete it. Depending on the law that applies to you, you may have further rights, such as to object to or restrict certain processing or to complain to a data protection authority. We will honour your rights under the law that applies to you.
Because OlaRemote is designed to store remote-control data locally, you can generally manage that information directly in the App or through your device settings. AFOLAOLA cannot ordinarily access local App data that is not transmitted to us.
For personal information you have provided to AFOLAOLA, or for a privacy question or request, contact privacy@afolaola.com.
We will review and respond to requests in accordance with applicable law.
12. Security
We aim to use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect information handled by AFOLAOLA. However, no application, device or method of transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
You should protect your phone and home network, install updates from trusted sources and avoid using remote-control software to access devices or networks without permission.
13. Changes to this Notice
We may update this Notice when OlaRemote's features, technical design, legal obligations or data practices change.
The latest version will be published at https://remote.afolaola.com/privacy. The "Last updated" date will indicate when the Notice was most recently revised. If a future version introduces a material change to the way personal information is handled, we will provide additional notice where required by law.
